Many of us think time is the most valuable thing, when really it is energy. The greater the energy we have, the greater the result we can produce.
Imagine having a drill and needing to make a thousand holes, but you only have one battery — because our body only has one battery.
You get to the last ten holes running on almost no charge, and you’re pushing that drill with everything you’ve got. Now those last few holes take hours.
Instead, you could plug the drill in, go home, enjoy your family, enjoy your life, come back fully charged, and finish in less than a minute the next day.
Working hard doesn’t mean more hours. We work hard in a window of high energy, not a marathon of exhaustion.
We’ve been taught “no pain, no gain,” and that’s why we keep forcing the drill with a dying battery. We think if we’re not in pain, we’re not improving.
Just to be clear, we do gain in pain, but we also gain with hugs and love. Pain is not essential.
We want to bring feelings back into the workplace because our feelings are signals, just like our other senses.
When your hand gets too close to a hot fire, your body reacts instantly. You don’t have to force yourself to pull away; it’s built into you.
That same intelligence is present in your emotional responses at work.
It is an alert, trying to tell us something. Sometimes the feeling is a resistance keeping us in our comfort zone. Sometimes it’s overthinking. Sometimes it is divine direction, guiding our path.
Whichever it is, we should take the time to pause, take a time-out, and ask: Is this fear? Or is this discomfort telling me not to go down this path?
This is not giving up on your dream or goal. This is realizing that there are many ways to get there.
When pain enters, we choose to pause, evaluate, and make new decisions to get there. Essentially, finding a more efficient path.
